The southern location is just one theory, however, concerning the location of the Garden of Eden.
Genesis 2 provides the first Old Testament map of the Bible. It is the first geographical reference in the history of man. The Bible is giving a description of where the Garden of Eden was.

However, other ancient peoples’ histories have been much easier to chronicle because they report astronomical events such as eclipses of the sun in their.
In the strictest sense, many of the writings of the Old Testament are anonymous. Few books explicitly identify their authors. Only by tradition do most books have an assigned author see table for an overview. The text itself makes no claims to be written by Moses. Solid tradition suggests that Moses wrote these books during the 40 years in the desert, in part recording instructions from God, in part preserving the history of the Jewish people. The question of authorship is no simpler in the remainder of the OT.
Talmudic traditions do link some books to well-known Biblical figures, yet most of the books do not directly identify their writers, and there is no unambiguous external evidence of authorship. The only support for the traditional claims for authorship and also dating of the books is found by searching the texts themselves for confirmations through style, details and historical references.
The 17 major and minor prophetic books seem to lay the strongest claims on authorship, as most identify those said to have received the divine words or visions that the books contain. Critical scholars find various reasons to doubt the authenticity of these claims. The authority of the ancient sources and the integrity of the writers who drew upon them to compile the Hebrew Scriptures are not diminished by this formal anonymity.

This is because the Old Testament books are arranged in chronological and theological order. Because these books were organized according to theological themes, perhaps it was not the intention of the authors of these books to provide perfectly chronological records, but instead to tell the history of Israel from a theological point of view.
This blog post will share a few dates which are known with certainty in the Old Testament while at the same time sharing why establishing a chronology of the Old Testament is difficult. For example, because of the records of the Assyrian and Babylonia chronologies that can be correlated with the reign of an Israelite or Judean king, accurate Bible dates can be determined within 10 years from 1, BC to BC. This is because of the careful records kept by the kings of Assyria and Babylon, as well as some type of datable astronomical event.
With the necessary information, accurate dates can be reconciled. However, this type of information is rare and mostly limited to after 1, BC. One of the dates scholars can have confidence in is the ascension of David to the throne in BC 2 Sam. This is because of contemporary Babylonia records. These biblical sources can be summarized into three categories:

New Testament canon , texts, and versions The New Testament canon Conditions aiding the formation of the canon The New Testament consists of 27 books, which are the residue, or precipitate, out of many 1st—2nd-century-ad writings that Christian groups considered sacred. In these various writings the early church transmitted its traditions: In a seemingly circuitous interplay between the historical and theological processes, the church selected these 27 writings as normative for its life and teachings—i.
Other accounts, letters, and revelations—e. The canon contained four Gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John , Acts , 21 letters, and one book of a strictly revelatory character, Revelation. These were not necessarily the oldest writings, not all equally revelatory, and not all directed to the church at large. The New Covenant , or Testament, was viewed as the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises of salvation that were continued for the new Israel , the church, through the Holy Spirit , which had come through Christ, upon the whole people of God.
Biblical Chronology and Dating of the Early Bible by Curt Sewell Introduction Until a few years ago, I thought that if one accepted the idea that the early Genesis chronology is reliable, one would automatically arrive at a date of about BC for the creation of the world. It turns out that may not be quite true. In this chapter, we will look at several different methods of dating these early events. This chapter is an upgraded and expanded revision of an article that I wrote, published in Bible and Spade magazine..
These ages completely disagree with the Bible, and therefore must be rejected by those who take the Bible to be an accurate historical record. Archaeologists also usually differ somewhat with a year age for the earth, but not by nearly as wide a margin.

The opening words of the first gospel account, by Matthew, can be applied to the whole of the New Testament: The four gospels are followed by the account of the preaching of Christ’s apostles, and by the letters they wrote to believers in him throughout the Roman world in the first century AD. But information about Jesus Christ is not confined to the New Testament.
His coming was anticipated by men and women who lived before the New Testament books were written: A Divine Watermark This simple statement conceals a miracle. And the miracle is this: The Old Testament might appear to be just God’s message to the Jewish people and an account of their history. But it is much more than this. There is something which is part of the very texture of the Old Testament and which cannot be removed without destroying the book as a whole.
Simply stated, it is the fact that we have the life history of Jesus written centuries before he was born. In other words, you can read all about Jesus in the Old Testament. It must be a matter of regret that all this information about Christ, revealed by the inspiration of God to His servants the prophets right from the dawn of human history, is so neglected.

Biblical chronology has been the subject of often fierce debate for the last years. Old Earth Creationism Main Article: Creationism Proponents of Old Earth and Young Earth creationism differ in their interpretations of this chronology. Young Earth creationists believe that the specific dates given for important events such as the global flood , for which the date, month, and year for all the events associated with the flood is recorded were intended to be understood literally, because there is no evidence of allegory, and no reason to read them as such.
In support they cite Hebrew scholars such as James Barr: Invariably they base their old-Earth beliefs on extra-biblical evidence, as with Gleason Archer: If this was the true intent of the Hebrew author a questionable deduction, as will be presently shown , this seems to run counter to modern scientific research, which indicates that the planet Earth was created several billion years ago.
Egyptian chronology Skeptics often criticize the Bible because its chronology disagrees with the standard chronology of ancient Egypt. However, this argument assumes that the Egyptian, rather than Hebrew chronology, is correct. One might just as easily argue that the Egyptian chronology is wrong, because it disagrees with the Hebrew. In fact, there is no original “Egyptian chronology. The Standard Egyptian Chronology was developed in the early 20th century, based on the assumption that no two Egyptian dynasties ruled simultaneously, which is demonstrably false , and a series of inferences and calculations based on the so-called Sothic cycle , an assumption without any substantive evidence to support it.
In contrast to this questionable Egyptian chronology invented in the 20th century and based on false assumptions and hypothetical calendars, the Biblical chronology records not only the birth and death of many of the patriarchs, but also reports their lives in relation to each other, and, in some cases, gives the month, day, and year when important events occurred.

Larue , Josephus’ listing represents what came to be the Jewish canon, although scholars were still wrestling with problems of the authority of certain writings at the time that he was writing.

Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward. The Jews were remarkably free in early times to edit and re-edit their Hebrew texts. They did not regard their scriptures as a single body, but as separate works. As we have already seen they often copied chunks of one book into another, sometimes changing names and other details to meet the needs of the moment.
Impious suggestions were also doctored. For example, it seemed wrong that God should stand before Abraham, so the two swapped places and Abraham now stood before God. There were genuine errors too. A common one was to incorporate marginal notes into the text. Typically, one scholar would add a note giving his explanation of an opaque passage.
